The mayor of the Latvian Rezekne Alexander Bartashevich called dismantle of a monument to the Soviet soldiers - liberators Latvia an act of vandalism and barbarity. The monument was established in 1976 in honor of the Red Army men who were lost at release of the city in days of World War II. It was created by sculptors Kaleys Otto and Silinsh Oyars, in the people the monument is known under the name "Alyosha". It was the last big monument to the Soviet soldiers to Latvia.
