To Republic of Karelia the unique church of the XVIII century completely burned down

right after leaving of tourist group.

On Lake Onega to Republic of Karelia there was the present cultural tragedy for the country – wooden Church of the Assumption of the XVIII century burned down. The temple was built in 1774, it stood on on the bank of the Kondopoga lip and was the highest of the remained wooden churches of Republic of Karelia. The church burned down almost completely, fire all icons are destroyed, the belltower fell off. Was in nobody, at suppression one firefighter suffered.

On the night of August 10 in church only. The fire began in the morning, the watchman called firefighters and helped them to fight fire. The electricity in church was not therefore the version about faulty conducting disappears. According to preliminary information, the temple lit up because of careless handling of fire. It is known that the fire began some minutes later after church visit by tourist group. Now investigators work with tourists.

Church of the Assumption was not only a monument of architecture of federal value, but also branch of the Kondopoga city museum of local lore.

"Is not present it equal among wooden tent churches. Surprising and unique, this church – the swan song of national architecture sung with such deep force that after it any sound seems more weakly, and not more powerfully", – the well-known architect and the restorer, the academician Alexander Opolovnikov wrote about this temple.
