Members of Christian Democrat union Germany elected Friedrich Merts the chairman of the party which for the first time in 16 years appeared in opposition. The German politician received absolute majority of voices in the first round of vote, reports on December 17 the German weekly journal "Der Spiegel". According to the published results of vote, Friedrich Merts is the main candidate for a post of the head of Christian Democrat union Germany, nowadays the largest opposition party Germany.
