Professor of the right to Marcel Rebel di Sosa wins the first round of presidential election in Portugal, taken place in Sunday, January 24. After calculation a little more than 50 percent of ballots it gathers 57 percent of votes, official data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country testify. His next competitor — the former rector of Lisbon university Sampaio da Novua — gathers 19,67 percent of votes.

In 1974 it entered Social Democratic Party, in 1975-1976 was the deputy, since 1981 held a position of the Secretary of State of council of ministers, and since June, 1982 — the minister of parliament affairs. From 1996 to 1999 Rebelu di Sosa led PSD party.
