Budolfi Cathedral as we know it was built in the last decades of the 14th century on the site of a parish church and was first included in the Atlas of Denmark in 1399. The church was built in the Gothic style from the most common building material in Denmark — large bricks. The size of the nave and choir is currently 56 meters long and 22 meters wide, excluding annexes. It was consecrated in honor of Saint Botolph, an Anglo-Saxon abbot and saint. Botolph, a famous scientist and saint, patron of farmers and sailors, was very revered in pre-reformation Denmark.
