New optical "transistor" will accelerate calculations in one thousand times at the minimum energy consumption

The international scientific group led by researchers from Skolkovo higher education institution science and technologies and IBM created extremely power effective optical switch which could replace electronic transistors in new generation of the computers operating with photons, instead of electrons. The switch not only directly preserves energy, but also does not demand cooling, and besides very quickly works: capable to carry out one trillion operations per second, it is 100-1000 times faster, than the most productive modern commercial transistors.
